Literature Text

Name: Mallory Kieran Sinnet.

Alias (Nicknames/Hero or villain name): Mal, Lori, Kiera, Annie. Jervis Tetch calls her the Dormouse. He calls the Wendigo a Bandersnatch. Mallory’s allias’ are Abigail Proctor, Abby Hobbs Elizabeth Nurse, Eliza Proctor, Beth Hobbs, and other names of those killed in the Salem Witch trials of 1697.

Villain name is the Wicked Witch.

Age: Mallory is thirty five, looking a little bit young. The Wendigo has its possessed age slowly so that it may last longer. Its age is unknown, but it is certainly ancient. If the Wendigo is cast out, it leaves Mallory with a slow aging appearance, among other things.

Gender: Mallory is female while the Wendigo is genderless.

Side (Hero, villain, neutral): Mallory is neutral at first, but when she loses her job she becomes a villain. The Wendigo is pure evil.

Occupation: Previously a psychiatrist at Arkham and later an understudy to the Scarecrow.

Appearance: Mallory’s face claim is Jayma Mays. Mallory is 5 feet and is very petite, weighing 110 pounds. She has a slim, boyish figure and has pale skin with an ever so slight pink tinge to it. Mallory’s huge grey eyes and shoulder length auburn hair, which has a fringe or is parted so that she has a side bang that covers half of her forehead, are her most noticeable features. She has a button nose and a heart-shaped face. Her bottom lip is slightly plump while her upper lip is thin. Such features make her look quite doll-faced. She (when the Wendigo didn’t lend her its own durability and strength) isn’t very strong physically, and looks fragile, like a porcelain doll.

She has a scar on the right side of her neck as a symbol of her prematurity and a birthmark on her right shoulder, a small barely noticeable black dot. She also has slight scars on the back of her legs from a surgery she had as a child to prevent her from walking on tip-toe because if she did so, she would have difficulty walking because her ligaments would tighten and cause pain to her feet. It didn’t work, so she still walks like that. She was inclined to walk on tip toe as a child because she believed that it made her faster on her feet, helping her speed when practicing chi-blocking and improving her balance.

She may not look as if she is looking at someone, but she is. Her eyesight is better on her left eye than on her right eye. When she’s looking at someone it seems as if she is looking at the space next to a person’s head. As she loses her job, Mallory becomes more fit and her fighting ability increases, as well as her range of weapons.

When she transforms into a Wendigo, stag horns bloom from her head. As the painful transformation proceeds, her limbs elongate, her teeth and nails sharpen, her skin turns grey-black, she grows taller, her hair becomes stringy and oily and her eyes widen, the pupils dilating. Her eye color turns from a stormy grey to an eerie yellow, and her voice becomes snake-like, whispery, and shrill. The Wendigo is a good ten and weighs ninety-seven lbs. Its eyesight is slightly blurry and it looks completely starved, showing its ribs. If you have seen Hannibal season one episode thirteen you notice that there is a sort of stag-man popping up. That is what I envision the Wendigo looking like. Except, since its host is a female it takes the body shape of a starved female with stringy, oily hair.

Civilian Clothing Style: Mallory has a vintage dress sense with a gothic flare (kind of a similar dress style to Emma Pillsbury (Peter pan collars, flower patterns, (high-topped) skirts, cardigans, bows, lace, etc) but with subtle skulls or bones or other macabre designs). She wears plaid shirts and jeans when hunting.

Hero/Villain Attire:

As one of Scarecrow’s crows, Mallory wore a dark blue - nearly black - hooded cape that reached her ankles, black lace up ankle boots, flexible black leggings, and this shirt: (remove the spaces for the link to work) socishopify.myshopify.com/prod… She changed her costume shirt regularly, but it was almost always black and long-sleeved. Along with her villain attire, she modified her appearance by dying her hair black and wearing black hair extensions that went to her waist. It was left loose most of the time. Only when she knew that it would be a hindrance during crimes would she pin it up or put it in a slightly messy fishtail braid. Coupled with the hooded cape, her costume made her look fittingly similar to Morticia Addams. She wore pasty white make-up and masks similar to that of 1800 black plague doctors. She wore contacts when doing what Scarecrow instructs and used make-up to enhance her eye size. Here is the make-up she applied: static8.depositphotos.com/1000… (I know that the above costume is irrelevant, but it’s just in case anyone would have wanted to roleplay when she was barely a crow)

When she became promoted, Mallory’s costume changed. Now she began wearing a yellow-white pilgrim bonnet ( s7d4.scene7.com/is/image/Costu… ) a yellowish white shirt collar tied to her neck with a bow taken from the noose used to hang her Salem Witch ancestor and black patches sewn at her elbows. Over it, she would wear a black long-sleeved shirt, leaving the yellow-white shirt sleeves and the collar of her shirt that was tied with the bow poking out. She usually wore a black pair of pants with black boots when they’re off in the city committing hands-on crimes.

When not on Gotham streets spreading fear, her costume became an inch-above-the-knee black dress with the same design as her work shirt, same collar and cuffs poking out, with black pantyhose, a slightly frilly yellowish white apron, and black buckle shoes. Sometimes she would either wear a witch’s hat or the bonnet. The witch’s hat was old, worn, and raggedy. Its black color had faded some and the hat sagged a bit. Mallory had found it while antiquing. The only bright color on it now were acorns, four leaf clovers, and other good luck charms cleverly hidden. The costume was severely based off of the Salem Witches of 1694, neatly taken care of yet creepy at the same time.

Often, her hair was pinned up, pulled into a fishtail braided bun with strands of hair curling inwards towards her face so that they barely graze her jaw. But, when she didn’t have the time to do her hair, it was worn down, full length at her shoulders with a slight curl running through the strands, usually slightly disheveled. She abandoned her glasses when out in Gotham, opting for contacts that change her eye color with each crime, from brown to black to blue to green to grey and the cycle repeats. But when at the hideaway, Mallory’s glasses were donned on. She continued to wear pasty white make-up, with red lipstick. As insinuated, her identity became no secret with this costume.

Powers (if any):

The Wendigo is very agile, able to ‘ride on winds’ because of its light weight.

Mallory is human, but could change into a Wendigo.

It was a must that Mallory change once a week and thus give the Wendigo full control of her body for half a day to gorge itself. The process was quite painful, but the Wendigo’s appearances have been gradually decreasing to monthly unless brought out.

The Wendigo possesses enhanced strength, durability, hearing, etc.

The Wendigo can withstand dire temperatures.

the Wendigo can mimic voices and both it and its host are expert hunters.

The Wendigo can cause Wendigo Fever.

The Wendigo is able manipulate the weather, and is especially comfortable in cold climates. Mallory can withstand freezing temperatures because of this and can manipulate ice and snow, plus the winds are stronger and thus allow her to glide more freely.

The Wendigo can summon dark creatures to attack its enemies.

The Wendigo is a friend of any of natures animals, especially dangerous ones.

(This is based off of the myth that the Wendigo has a ‘heart of ice’) The Wendigo can control its hosts’ emotions, intensifying them or stifling them. This is good for the Wendigo, but bad for Mallory. However, gradually this control lessens thanks to Batman and Scarecrow’s help.

Later, once the Wendigo is control or out of her system entirely, Mallory’s bad luck will overwhelm her after years of being unused. If she decides to study for the greater good, she will learn how to control the bad luck curse and use it for the greater good. If not used for the greater good, it remains a curse for her. When she does become fully blown evil, Mallory will occasionally do good things for other villains and stray animals or anonymously to civilians to balance out her good and bad luck, along with wearing good luck trinkets. (It is similar to Jinx from Teen Titan’s, except with pros and cons. Think of Carrie’s manipulation of objects. There is an energy surrounding Mallory that allows bad things to happen, such as if she jumps off a roof, she’ll have more of a chance of falling badly because an object would get in her way, say a couple long and sharp shards of glass. However, Mallory can manipulate the bad luck energy to move the shards of glass towards a pursuer or a non-lethal place. Depending on whether she manipulates the energy to move objects towards a good intention or a bad intention, the bad luck energy trained on her either increases or decreases. So, keeping with the falling-off-a-roof metaphor, she may either escape successfully or something horrible may greet her.)

Fighting Style/Weapons:

Uses stealth and shadows to her advantage, taking others by surprise.

Once she is promoted, she uses a gun stocked with bullets that have fear gas in them, named fear bullets.

When promoted, she uses a broom as a staff/sword or a gun. She has different type of broom weapons.

Her mother taught her how to chi-block, contort her body, and do gymnastics. She practiced every other day ever since she was twelve and still practices whenever she helps Scarecrow with his heists.

She’s strong when it comes to words, and she’s smart.

She is very creative when it comes to plans, and gives input when asked.

When in an argument about something that she believes in she won’t back down.

Mallory is good at analyzing people.

Her father took her hunting regularly as a teen. She still keeps that hobby to this day, so she knows her way around the woods. She can wield a rifle and other hunting utensils with relative familiarity, and can survive in the woods.

Promoted or not, she uses a knife and a bit of fear gas when working with Crane. She carries a gas mask with her as well.

She adapts easily to new environments, unused to staying in a place for a super long amount of time.

She doesn’t like conflict unless she feels strongly about something, so she is easy-going in matters that don’t affect her.

Is a marvelous cook and is musically talented, both vocally and instrumentally.

Is adept in nearly all matters of the arts; acting, sculpting, painting, singing, music playing, writing, dancing, acrobatics, ice-skating, etc.

Weaknesses (No ‘he/she is too nice for their own good’ or other weaknesses that are hard to integrate into a roleplay):

Since she does have a superpower of sorts, I’ll give her weaknesses along with her powers. These weaknesses are both her weaknesses power-wise and person-wise.

Mallory has horrid bad luck that has plagued her since childhood thanks to a curse passed down her family. It is uncontrolled by her but is kept in control by the Wendigo (what little is still inside her now). The curse was bestowed on her mother’s side of the family and would only disappear with the Wendigo’s curse.

Mallory suffered from blackouts when the Wendigo was in control. She had no memory of what went on during that time and it never came to her memory unless the Wendigo shared its memory with her. The Wendigo didn’t share its memories with Mallory, but Mallory couldn’t block it from receiving her memories.

Mallory had no control over the powers bestowed upon her until she conquered her fear of the Wendigo. The powers were the Wendigos’ until Mallory learned how to take them without getting hurt and started used them for herself. Before, if she tried to take them rawly without any prior experience, she would get hurt physically or mentally.

Mallory has every day human weakness unless in a dire situation. The Wendigo would keep her alive, but only helped if she was on the brink of death. Although she can do so, Mallory doesn’t dare abuse the privilege of being able to heal any brink of death injuries unless she wishes to creep others out. If she is in a head-on collision car crash and she is badly injured, she makes the Wendigo automatically slowly heal the injuries that would have killed her. It won’t heal anything else. If her arm got dislocated or broken, tough luck.

Depending in her mood, pre-Wendigo Mallory could be too obedient and could sometimes be seen as a coward despite how strong her moral compass was.

She suffers abandonment issues (Her abandonment issues could be better phrased as a fear of being helpless and of no-one believing what is happening to her, thus not receiving help. So she has issues in that sense, wary of people and their intentions. This become prominent when Batman couldn’t exactly save her and her life of normalcy by whipping up the cure he had promised fast enough. She feels that he is partially to blame for her descent into crime, as many rogues do. So she gets slightly clingy to those who do believe her and help her and spiteful to those who don’t.)

Sometimes she couldn’t talk to some people because anxiety started to build up within her, but since her promotion her confidence has increased.

the Wendigo had strong control of Mallory’s emotions and state of mind, so it used to be hard to tell if Mallory was in control or not. Mostly she wasn’t unless the Wendigo was too tired and starved to exert control. Now that Mallory’s become more villain-like and has gained control over the Wendigo, her emotions are no longer stifled, which tends to be a good and bad thing.

Her sleepwalking poses a problem, often alarming others and getting her into trouble if she doesn’t have her medication or restraints.

Her nightmares and sicknesses constantly leave her fatigued and exhausted.

When it benefits her, Mal poses as a very meek and quiet woman, a woman who is always thinking of others before herself. This can be a problem since she can do so too much that it can hinder her progress as a villain. She didn’t really have much backbone with the Wendigo controlling her, so to speak, and now it takes a bit to bring it out. But When it comes to getting the full antidote to get the Wendigo out of her, then she will stop at nothing in her desperate search to find such a solution, and if people harm the few people she cares about that backbone will show.

Although it is hard to get her angry, when she is angry it can often lead to her saying cold and cutting remarks that she’ll later regret. Or not, depending on the person she had hurt. She had slight psychopathic tendencies, only caring for a rare few who have made an impact on her. She does not exactly care too much for acquaintances and strangers and if she hurts them in any way she believes that it is justified and requires nary an apology. Her parents inclined that behavior towards her, having such tendencies themselves despite faking remorse and concern a variety of times to manipulate others. She picked that up from them as well.

Mallory had a tendency to lie to herself often, but couldn’t really lie to others unless she felt as if they deserved it. Otherwise, it would eat her up inside. Ever since she became a villain, though, Mallory finds it easier and easier to lie both to herself and others each time she does, but makes sure to only use it when she feels that it is important.

Pure silver, if it comes into contact with the Wendigo (since they don’t get close enough and their bodies aren’t thick enough for such a clear and accurate hit), takes way longer to heal than any other type of weapon and greatly hurts it, akin to how it hurts a werewolf. It can kill the host and the Wendigo if sliver breaks skin and enters the bloodstream. In other words, silver is lethal to a Wendigo.

A fire must be kept burning at all times to keep the Wendigo from attacking. But it won’t last long. Fire is also lethal to a Wendigo, but it takes longer, has to be a scalding hot temperature, be kept ablaze, and must penetrate skin and bone.

Mallory gets hungry terribly easily. Since the Wendigo gorges itself, when Mallory changes back to a human she automatically pukes up whatever her human body can’t contain. This causes her to be sick soon after the Wendigo is done feasting and leaves her weak, needing to eat despite how sick she feels.

When dealing with a Wendigo be sure to have as many magical artifacts as you can. Especially magical silver and magical fire. But, since a part of magic lies in the Wendigo, it builds up certain resistances (as a friend informed me, “they are NOT completely undead, contrary to popular belief,”) because when flesh is consumed the Wendigo shields the hosts’ heart in magical ice to further symbolize that they have begun to surrender their humanity for something vile. Explains the whole “heart of ice” concept and their powers over ice and snow.

Goals: To keep her humanity, her sanity, to keep the demon festering inside her at bay, to control her bad luck entirely. Deep down inside, she really wants to find someone who can tolerate her being a Wendigo, who believes her and wants to help her plight diminish. She believes that she has found that person in Crane. Above all, Mallory wants a way to escape the crimes she has committed and reintegrate into society (or so she wants to believe).

Fears: Eating a loved one, being imprisoned or killed, being fully possessed by the Wendigo inside her, her bad luck killing her after all these years, loneliness. She is severely uncomfortable with anything resembling witch craft killings, despite having a near fascination with the subject.

Other

Hobbies: Watching black and white movies, feeding strays, sleeping, cooking, writing, reading, researching, singing, lounging with a few strays, hunting, acrobatics, pacing, analyzing, planning, dancing to classical music or swing music, and other things in no particular order.

Mallory owns a Doberman used for hunting and a cabin in the woods that are on the outskirts of Gotham, where a few cats now reside with the dog. She feeds strays and woodland creatures remains of the food she cooks and, as a result, has attracted numerous animals to her cabin.

Mallory stalks Scarecrows’ victims when he tells her to and disposes of them for him, her nimble moves and habit of sticking to the shadows being ideal for remaining unseen.

Mallory often takes care of the mundane chores, such as scheduling appointments for heists, cooking meals, arranging business deals, picking out rewards and opportunities that she knows will benefit them, hunting and intimidating those that threaten Crane, testing fear gas on herself and others, making sure the new recruits stay in line, and patching people up. All Crane worries about is his toxin, experiments, and his plots. However, he does remember to intimidate his underlings and they both update all of their weapons.

Mallory stays up until ungodly hours in the day watching black-and-white movies just so she’ll make herself be so tired that she won’t hopefully have any dreams throughout the night. It works sometimes.

Mallory puts on a friendly, caring, non-judgemental front for some of the villains, calling them things like ‘dearie’ when they allow her to and doing her best not to make any dangerous enemies by getting on people’s good sides. Heck, she’s even called Batman ‘sweetheart’ once or twice. Didn’t stop her from getting cuffed, though. She makes herself be viewed as a calculating yet more help-than-harm kind of woman, a person who only wants everyone to succeed. It is mostly a lie. She only wants the best for those who she truly feels connected to or those she deems ‘need her help’. But, there are subtly indications that the front will go in the drop of a hat when people see her comparing killing techniques with the deadlier villains or her employer, or hunting.

Mallory adores singing and dancing. Swing and rock especially, with a bit of classical, ballet, or Sinatra thrown in there. She believes that Crane’s long limbs make him the ideal swing partner, but she has reached the conclusion that he would never dance with her. Mal doesn’t dare put him on the spot and embarrass him, so she settles with any partner gladly

When she cooks, hunts, cleans, pursues her ‘artistic’ hobbies, and tortures, Mallory listens to music. She believes that it makes things fun, gets her creative juices flowing, and that she moves faster with her radio or her headphones on. It was a habit developed in Arlen and that kept up with her ever since.

She uses every part of an animal or human once they’re dead, convinced that they need to be honored so it doesn’t constitute as killing for sport, something her father engrained into her from their very first kill. Which, it still does, but it becomes practical. So, whatever isn’t edible fertilizes gardens, turns into fish hooks, becomes a den for animals, or something else.

Mallory has a strong, mildly unhealthy obsession with witchcraft, particularly her family’s supposed blend of magic.

As his understudy, she has been drilled repeatedly, overbearingly on Crane’s notes and other important information lest she need to replace him for an amount of time.

My improved character for Batman. Been working on her for what will be a year now, and some edits will be made. I apologize for the mix between past and present tenses. I'll fix them if there are any still evident.

Batman doesn't belong to me, nor do the characters mentioned. They belong to DC.
Mallory and her family members belong to me, HBCFanAlex.
The picture does not belong to me.
All rights go to their respective owners.

Edited on 10-12-14:
Since I've succeeded at making the thing too long for DeviantArt, I am posting the character sheet in parts.

Ok... so... I don't want to seem like that person, but I'm going to be that person because apparently no one else is going to stand up about this. I've read through a lot of your character's profile, and I've gotta say that there is a lot of cultural appropriation in this. I'm going to go on the assumption that you are not Native American, especially since there is a lot of incorrect information here.

Firstly, what does Paganism have ANYTHING to do with Wendigos? Wendigos are not witches. If your OC is truly a Wendigo, the name you use should reflect that. And before you complain that here personal history has everything to do with it, no. It really doesn't. All Batman's villains and DC superheroes have names that reflect the character and what they do. Since your OC is supposedly a Wendigo, it should reflect that instead of ripping on Paganism and witch craft. Especially since neither of them are related.

Secondly, your character is NOT a wendigo. Nothing about their profile truly sticks to the truth and history behind the Wendigo and their spirits.
1) Once you turn, you CAN'T go back. You have lost ALL humanity in every regard. You can't "change" once a month and call it a Wendigo. Wendigos aren't some hybrid of werewolves, so do not treat them as such.
2) Wendigos work ALONE. They can't even stand to work with their own kind - if my knowledge proves me right.
3)  "Fears: eating a loved one" Ok... No. Wendigos don't give a shit. They HAVE no family. They eat because they are hungry, and as far as I am aware, they don't go picksy-choosey. Human flesh is human flesh.
4) "Goals: to keep her humanity" If she's truly a Wendigo, she has already LOST her humanity. She can't regain it, which makes the majority of her hobbies, interests, fears, etc null and void. They don't work, and there is no consistency with the lore of the wendigos. And the entirety of thlis first part of the profile shows that you have a significant lack of knowledge and respect for Native American folk lore and culture.

Seriously. Actually take the time to do legitimate, educational, accurate research before you put THIS much time into an OC.
I could clearly go into FAR more detail about what is wrong with this OC in terms of its "Wendigo" status.... HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since I am not of Native American decent, I'm going to leave that to someone who is. Because as a white person, it is my responsibility to give POC and Native Americans a proper voice and not silence it. I noticed before typing this that you are friends with Yoruhoshi. I dunno if you have talked to her at all, but she has extensive knowledge and cultural background when it comes to Native American tradition and folk lore. I suggest that if you have the time, you ask her about it and pay attention to what she has to say. You might be surprised at how fascinating Wendigos actually are.

To wrap this segment up, I'm going to also tell you that canonically, Batman has never encountered Wendigos. So don't go making statements as such just to make your OC look cool or special. They can be special without distorting the canon writing to your own whim.

Also, if you plan to include Paganism in your writing, be sure that you have more knowledge of it than just the Salem Witch Trials. There is SO MUCH MORE in terms of history, practices, and knowledge that we have about it. If you are truly fascinated by it, go chat with someone who is Pagan. Go read some Old English literature (no, not Shakespeare... earlier than that). Go do some actual research than just on Salem. There are so many other cool things out there about the history of Paganism that don't involve the Salem Witch Trials.

So to end my big ass comment, I will leave you this:
Aside from the blatant cultural appropriation, you have a nice start on an OC. I highly highly recommend that you do some thorough, heavy revision on this OC before you offend someone who is actually Native American. Realize that there are HEAVY AND GRAVE CONSEQUENCES for misusing a culture that is not yours and is an oppressed minority. You have a responsibility as a writer to educate yourself, and to respect the cultures you are writing about.
